3 official SEO tips direct from Google

The latest SEO research from web analytics company reveals Google Search accounted for around half of external referrals to the publishers in its network in 2018.

In January 2019, on Google’s official website, they shared some tips on how they do search engine optimisation (SEO) right.

Let’s take a look at the top three tips direct from Google that they learnt through trial and error, to help you achieve a cohesive website SEO strategy.

1. Small tweaks can lead to big results

Focusing on little, incremental changes to your website’s overall SEO strategy can produce noticeable gains over time. According to Google, their Google My Business website increased 2x in organic traffic after implementing a number of web fundamental best practices. These include the adding canonical attributes to their web pages.

What are canonical attributes?

The rel=’canonical’ attribute is an HTML element that enables web developers to prevent duplicate content issues by defining the “canonical” or “favoured”, version of a web page.

For example, the same web page could be available in a web version and a print only version. By using the rel=’canonical’ attribute in the print version, you show search engines that the web version is the version that should be found in the search results and the print only version.

2. Don’t be scared of technological changes, welcome them

Google states that you will get better results the more you embrace new technologies. For example, improving the content on your website can lead to an additional 1,000 impressions a day.

According to Statistica, the statistics portal, today over 50% of website traffic comes from mobile users. Google Search has quickly been adapting in response to this change with new developments such as AMP and Progressive Web Apps.  

3. Combine your websites

It can be alluring to create several websites, each containing similar content to target different customer profiles or geographic regions.

However, it’s not a good idea SEO wise to develop multiple near-duplicate content sites based on different campaigns or your marketing goals. Creating one exceptional site instead of multiple microsites is the best way to encourage organic growth over time to your site.

According to Google, after they decided to overhaul their marketing websites. By cleaning up several old websites, consolidating their content and focusing on one great website for Google Retail, doubled the site’s call-to-action click-through rate (CTR) and increased their organic traffic by 64%.
